Pregnancy Q & A

How can I ensure a healthy pregnancy?

A healthy baby starts with a healthy mother. Prepare your body for the extra stresses of pregnancy by:

  • Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, healthy proteins, and healthy fats
  • Starting a fun and sustainable exercise routine
  • Quitting smoking and drinking
  • Cutting back on caffeine
  • Taking a prenatal vitamin that contains at least 400 mcg of folic acid

As soon as you’re thinking of becoming pregnant or learn that you are, you need a thorough medical exam. Your physician will determine your blood type and test you for diabetes, anemia, STDs and other infections, and genetic abnormalities.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is not as scary as it sounds. It’s a term used to call attention to the special needs of the mother and child to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

Your pregnancy may be considered high risk if you:

  • Have an infection (e.g., HIV, CMV, hepatitis C)
  • Have a pre-existing health condition (e.g., diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, heart disease)
  • Are under 17 or older than 35
  • Are carrying twins or other multiples
  • Have a history of preterm labor, preeclampsia or eclampsia, or at least three miscarriages

Your pregnancy is also considered to be high risk if you are carrying a baby with a genetic disorder, such as Down syndrome.

What kind of care should I expect during my pregnancy?

During your pregnancy, you should see your OB/GYN specialist regularly to ensure that you and your baby remain healthy. You will receive ultrasounds, blood tests, amniocentesis, and other tests. Regular checkups are the best way to avoid possible complications such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.

You should see your doctor regularly for prenatal checkups:

  • Weeks four to 28: once a month
  • Weeks 28 to 36: every two weeks
  • Weeks 36 to 40: once a week
